A Hawaiian Sunrise

Much to our surprise, this group of (C. Harmill 'Orange Glow' x Gur. aurantiaca 'Mishima Spots') have begun to flower just one short year out of their flasks. We were further delighted to see this seedling population yielding a rather homogeneous flowering in vibrant shades of reds and oranges. The highly saturated clusters do nothing short of demand attention and remind us of the beautiful sunrises that grace the side of the island we call home.

It’s been a joy to ship a bit of sunshine out these last few weeks and we hope this compact grower has been a stellar addition to your inventory.

Back in Black

A long awaited return for our beloved “black orchid” Monn. Millenium Magic ‘Witchcraft’ FCC/AOS this week! Having been noticeably absent from our availability lists for the last couple of years, we’re thrilled to announce that its back and better than ever. As we remain steadfast in our commitment to provide our customers with uniform plants of the highest quality, there may be occasional lapses in inventory and we, as always, appreciate your patience and understanding. With that said, what a wild welcome back it was for these lovelies, flying off the benches just as quickly as we were able to harvest them. Didn’t get a chance to place your order? Not to worry, we’ve still got plenty.

Please note that as these plants mature and enter their flowering season it is typical for them to drop all of their leaves. Don’t be alarmed, just cut back on feeding and watering and resume once a new growth appears.

Slipper Orchid Conference Open House

We opened our doors this past Sunday to a fantastic group of fellow Paph enthusiasts attending the World Slipper Orchid Conference put on by the Paphiopedilum Guild. Our greenhouses were a flurry of activity as our guests perused our collection and left with full trays and contented hearts (we hope). The camaraderie of being around fellow growers, collectors and all around orchid lovers is always a rush. Couldn’t have thought of a better way to kickstart the new year!

Gomesa Jiaho Queen 'Jia Ho' FCC/AOS

Gomesa Jiaho Queen 'Jia Ho' FCC/AOS in bloom.

Gomesa Jiaho Queen 'Jia Ho' FCC/AOS GM/TOGA is truly a sight to behold. This has been one of our most sought after Oncidinae hybrids the last couple of seasons, selling out both on our list as well as at our local show. Winning two of the highest award designations, few others can compete with its striking, high contrast flowers. Don’t let its compact size fool you, even our younger plants in 3” pots will have inflorescences that produce several flowers lasting about a month.

This Catt’s Got our Tongue

Take our word for it, these miniature Cattelya hybrids are the purr-fect addition to any collection! Caulocattleya Chantilly Lace 'Twinkle' (Cattleya El Dorado Splash and Caularthron bicornutum) is a compact grower that averages 2-4 flowers per inflorescence. These blushing freckled cuties are about 2.5 inches fully open and have a mild fragrance similar to that of lilacs. We let these Catts out of the bag last week and the demand was absolutely feral. Meowza!

There’s something special about plants that flower below eye level. Ones that invite you to bend down for a closer look before rewarding you with their splendor—bonus points when that reward is accompanied by a subtle yet delightful fragrance that otherwise may have been missed. As its name suggests, Warczewiczella amazonica (formerly Cochleanthes amazonica) is native to South America. This plant is fast growing, and its long lasting flowers are quite large at about 3 inches across. These beauties will be leaving our available offerings soon, so pick some up if you haven’t already!
